“So you finally hit your target,” Nokomis said as Kibben finished bandaging my palm. “Guess that makes me an excellent teacher.” She dropped a huge egg into a bubbling puddle—hot sprig, she called it. She and Kibben had found the Eastor chicken’s nest before the commotion with the mysterious purple smoke. I hadn’t told them about that part. I’d have to start by telling them I was a shade.

“Yeah…” I stared at the dancing bubbles. “This is a chicken’s egg? It’s bigger than an actual chicken.”

“Its head maybe.” Nokomis and Kibben laughed, even though there’d been no joke.

When the egg cracked, signaling it was fully cooked, Nokomis dropped it in a cold puddle, shelled it, then split it into three portions. We dug in.

After a while, Kibben broke the silence. “You sure he wasn't a pux?”

I nodded.

Kibben wiped drops of yolk from his mouth. “What d-did he look like?”

“He was half my size with a huge bumpy nose, beady eyes, and only four toes, from what I could see.”

“A boogie.” Kibben's eyes widened. “They’re outcasts mostly because of their insensitive pranks, but some do pretend to be civilized. Was he wearing brown or blue or nothing at all?”

I closed my eyes and tried to picture his clothes. “Brown.”

“So not one from the north. Forest boogies don’t usually go north of the Wandering Woods, so how would he have heard about the bells?” Nokomis frowned. “This is bad. The aerydust is spreading faster than we thought.”

“Should wwwe go back? Wouldn’t they have c-c-called for us if something was wrong?”

“But…” My stomach clenched. I lowered my head, rubbing a foot on the back of my shin. “What about the potion?”

“She’s right. We can’t go back now,” Nokomis said. “If it’s spreading, that’s even more reason to get this done.”

I bit my lip to hide a smile.

“Where to next, Cricket?” Nokomis stood, popping the last of the egg into her mouth.

I pulled out Fenlick’s letter. “We need hematoads and critterpuffs from McCleary Pond.”

Nokomis and Kibben exchanged glances.

“Are you sure that’s what it says? Not McCreaky Pond, or McCloudy Pond?” Nokomis reached for the letter.

I shoved it back into my pocket. “I can read perfectly fine. It says McCleary.”

Kibben gulped.

I narrowed my eyes. “What’s wrong with McCleary Pond?”

“I’ve never been, but I’ve heard of it. It’s… hard to describe,” Nokomis said, rubbing the back of her neck.

“It’s wwworse at night.” Kibben glanced at the sky. “It’s t-too late to-to-to-to make the tr-tr-tr-tr—”

“It’s okay, Kibben. We’ll rest here for the night. We can make the trip first thing tomorrow,” Nokomis said, jamming her trembling hands deep in her pockets.
